Speaker Opens Debate on Dublin Steam Navigation Bill

The speaker took the chair at four o clock as Sir MM Stuart moved an amendment to read the Dublin Steam Navigation Company Bill a third time six months hence. Mr E Tennent backed the amendment arguing that limited liability allows heavy raises and harms small speculators. He claimed steam packets need more protection than sailing vessels and questioned why extra favours should be given. The company has had 61 bills since 1828 and in 1833 raised 74 000 pounds for river Shannon improvements, but no account of expenditure is produced. He argued they should confine operations to the Shannon and not extend to British Channel ports, and that limited liability unfairly lets them compete with fully liable firms.
