Emperor’s Heirs and Court Craft in Imperial China
A detailed, though fragmentary, portrait of the Qing imperial system and court at Pekin. Describes the throne’s control by the supreme mandarins, the board of Ceremonies, censors, provincial governors, and local tax and judicial officials. Notes the Han bo and Sacred College, the examination system, and the governor’s despotic powers. hints at a European observer’s bewilderment at the elaborate bureaucratic structure and ceremonies.
