Birthday Traditions Spark Mischief Across London Suburbs
A fragmented Victorian style account recounts eccentric birthday customs of various London figures. One man reportedly hoists a dinner with misfortune over guests, another entertains by reading grim prophecies, while a southern suburb hosts a mock naval banquet for a cat lover’s feline feast. A notable miser plans annual feasts, using lavish seafood and wines, with guests allowed to “save the run of the table.” The piece notes a diverging, humorous contrast to a civilised city ritual and mentions authorities scheduling notices for related events.
