The Heathen and the Heroine on the London Stage
A long fragment recounts a Victorian stage debate on women’s roles, praising a virtuous heroine while critiquing male vanity. It centers on Sylvester the tenor and Sylvester’s actress beloved, detailing their love, performances, social pressures, and a dramatic engagement ending in betrayal and heartbreak. The piece notes the actor’s rise, the actress’s sacrifice, and a donor lover’s distant charity amid ruin.
