Saltire Mills and the Salt Oat Alpaca Wool Boom
A short, sweeping tale traces the rise of Sir Titus Salt from a Liverpool wool dealer to founder of the Saltaire Mills in Bradford. It recounts how a discarded camel wool, later named alpaca, transformed the textile industry, expanding imports from South America and boosting Bradford’s industrial growth to become a leading global producer. The piece highlights the 1836 inception, 1852 imports of 2.19 million pounds, and rapid expansion to 3.88 million pounds by 1870, with Saltaire employing thousands.
