Australian Smith Sets 16 Mile World Motoring Record
Wizard Smith breaks the 16 mile world speed record at Ninety Mile Beach near Auckland on January 17, averaging 148.637 mph. He uses a modified Cadillac with a Rolls Royce Eagle VIII aero engine, retaining the frame and drivetrain, and receives engine work from Don Harkness. The car features a 12 cylinder engine, 350 hp, and aims to surpass Segrave’s 251.361 mph later, with Vacuum Oil and Plume Appotenic Motor Spirit supplying fuels.
