Agricultural and Pastoral Notes edited under the direction of the Minister of Agriculture draw on department experience. The notes summarize farm practices and advisory guidance for farm management and livestock care.
An agricultural trial at Graton reports winter ploughing produced higher yields than summer methods. Over five seasons the winter-ploughed plots showed an average rise of about 12 bushels per acre, with a net gain valued at 42 shillings. Benefits cited include better decomposition, improved soil texture, increased plant food availability, and reduced weed growth.
The article argues silage as a drought hedge for wheat farmers. It explains silage rotation with wheat preserves forage, maintains stock, lowers risk, and enables profit from green crops. It notes water supply needs and urges farmers to adopt silage despite costs.
Readers report calls for better horse breeding and industry standards amid scarce demand for undersized stock. Farmers, breeders, and merchants urge stricter sire oversight, improved mare quality, and state action to raise horse efficiency for city and farm work.
The report outlines fruit decay causes during handling from picking to storage and methods to slow spoilage. It details temperature and humidity targets below 70 deg F and 80 89 percent, discusses ventilation, packing, and minimizing handling, and notes beekeeping observations for pollination and disease control.
A pamphlet from the Department of Agriculture in Sydney critiques pig housing as unsanitary and poorly designed. It notes damp floors and draughts cause illness, describes crude pigsties with no proper floors, and calls for better construction to improve hygiene and profitability.
The Gosford District Citrus Packings House with the Department of Agriculture tested storage methods on fruit from May to July. Trials compared two methods paper-lined ecusen and unlined sasex to reduce damage while gathering.
A collage of aphorisms from Carlyle to Shakespeare praising honesty diligence and self discipline contrasts with a grim welfare quip about an old maid. The pieces reference exemplary figures and virtues while the final gag critiques charity and public aid with a sharp punchline.
A fragmented poem laments wasted shillings in tea buys and dust in bags. It hints at careful selection and trimming waste to improve taste and value. The piece frames tea as a refined, economical habit requiring mindful preparation.
