An advance of 20 cents per sack in flour has occurred recently and cornmeal may rise. Currants rose two cents per pound and confectionery, tobaccos, and cigarettes advanced. Sugar prospects look higher with wholesalers predicting further hikes. Eggs and creamery butter have also advanced.
Arborfield diary items mention Ernest Edwards returning from Toronto after a year, George Flannigan visiting, and a Patriot Concert planned at Arborhool House on Sept 18. Mr. and Mrs. Ladounceur of Tisdale visit Mr. and Mrs. Dupont, and local folks discuss a possible school shed.
In Toronto Aug 28 captains of Patriotic Food campaign reported varied contributions from a streetcar ticket to 300 dollars. Colonel Chandler of the Salvation Army team noted the wide range of gifts and amid playful bidding a ticket was valued at 800 to 1000 dollars. The event closed with cheers for the donor.
In London on August 31 the Prime Minister faced a question about alien subjects holding stock in companies registered here or abroad. At the Winnipeg August session, Mr Langley urged new rules for No 3 Manitoba North wheat to be clean well filled and weigh no more than 60 pounds per bushel and contain 6 sound wheat. He argued for narrowing gluten to curb quality drift and create marketable grades. He favored abolishing Manitola No 1 Hard and treating Marquis wheat as lower than Red Fife, stating hybrids revert to poorer parent varieties.
A Patriotic Concert is planned for Friday evening September 18 at 8 pm in Arborfield featuring English and Canadian talent and popular French selections. The event invites all to show support for the patriotic movement and rally to the flag in this community.
