A massive blaze at dawn in the San Agustin convent and cathedral in Guayaquil, Ecuador, destroyed the cathedral and burned six blocks toward San Alejo and Chimborazo. President Alfaro and his family were evacuated to a river steamer. By 3:30 a.m. the fire was under control, with three million sucres in losses and about thirty dead and injured. thousands were left homeless.
City authorities back a Tuesday bicycle parade in Metropolis with prizes: $100 first, $50 second, $25 third, banners. Participants may enter Paseo from Puente de San Francisco Revillagigedo Nueva Balderas and Rosales, meet at 4 30 p m at the judges stand No 669 Blasio Baths.
Ambroise Thomas born Metz August 5 1811. Son of a music professor. Entered Conservatory 1828, won major prizes, grand prize 1852. Studied in Italy, then at Opera Comique Paris produced operas including Le Card Souge d une Nuit d Eie Psyche. Hamlet was his chef d oeuvre. elected to the Academy of Fine Arts 1857 and became Conservatory director in 1871.
