Alberta grower shares top prize in Smoky Lake pumpkin contest
Allen Makarchuk’s 770 and a half pound pumpkin tied for first at the Smoky Lake Great White North Pumpkin Festival. Airdrie rival also matched the weight, forcing a split prize of 700 dollars each as Makarchuk reflected on a stem slip that cost him a potential win. His 354 pound squash won separately, with about 6,000 to 7,000 festival attendees weighing in on the giants. Makarchuk noted a rot wrecked an even larger pumpkin, possibly 850 pounds, depriving him of another possible victory next year.
