Horizon School Division partners with local agencies to construct a new school in Sri Lanka. The initiative aims to improve access to education, with project details coordinating funding, builders, and administration through regional stakeholders.
Taber hosts a Canada Day program starting at 8 a.m. with Kiwanis pancake breakfast at the Community Centre. Activities include a flag raising by the Royal Canadian Legion, Bare Beef lunch benefiting a local charity, kids activities, an Astrojump and face painting, aquafun centre events, and Bill Lawson’s 1 p.m. set followed by fireworks at dusk.
ATA president Frank Bruseker stopped in Taber to warn that the provincewide teacher bargaining this fall will be challenging. He cited a three percent funding rise as insufficient amid inflation and noted potential strike action as contracts for about 30,000 of 33,000 Alberta teachers expire August 31.
Alberta Finance Minister Lyle Oberg announced an $8.5 billion surplus in the annual report amid three years of growth. He noted population gains and low unemployment, warned surpluses may shrink next year, and discussed budget options including possible health care premium changes.
