Alberta ends 10 percent water licence holdback rule
Alberta removes the 10 percent holdback on most water licence transfers to boost water availability for communities irrigators and industry. The policy directs holdbacks only when needed to protect other users or the environment, expanding transfers in the Milk South Saskatchewan and Battle River basins and aligning with the Water Act. As of January 2025 there have been 407 transfers with 256 holding back water.
