The Dec 20 budget vote faces a 4.5 percent tax rise, higher utility and recreation fees. Expenditures rise by about 2.32 million with 1.8 million more revenue needed from taxes and fees. Government transfers drop nearly one million, making Mayor Ray Bryant call 2011 a difficult balance.

At a December council meeting, Taber’s utility rates were approved for 2011 with fixed water wastewater and recycling up three percent and stormwater up twenty percent. The average family of four would see about nine dollars more per month, with total bills rising from 117.19 to 125.93 in 2011 and reaching 135.88 by 2013. Commercial and institutional users will also see sizable increases, while apartment owners gain about 32.63 and institutions about 90.31 per month.
