Nepean Shire Council Convicted Over Dismissal Of Soldier
In a Special Court ruling on Monday Nepean Shire Council was ordered to pay 504 pounds 8 shillings for dismissing returning soldier Joseph Henry Mc Gowen without reasonable cause. McGowen won 400 pounds compensation. council fined 20 pounds with 68 pounds 8 shillings costs and 21 pounds witnesses’ expenses. Council plans appeal. McGowen, once shire engineer, served in war and was reinstated on return before later suspension and dismissal by the council on a casting vote. Magistrate Bromdhead urged generosity to veterans.

County Council Estimates for Cumberland County Dec 1946

Illicit still found submerged at Cedar Creek waterhole
Customs investigator in the Special Federal Court testified an illicit still apparatus was found submerged in a waterhole at Cedar Creek near Picton. Joseph Michael Byrnes pleaded guilty to possessing the illicit still and was fined £100. The site on November 30, 1945 revealed six 50 gallon casks, five 44 gallon drums, molasses, yeast, condensers, hoses, a rotary pump and other gear. Byrnes claimed six to eight gallons of spirit were made and taken to Sydney where it was condemned. He said they intended it for a Christmas party. Most equipment lay under four feet of water.
