The Sydney Harbour submarine raid disrupts cocky complacency and spurs both soldiers and civilians to heightened readiness. It highlights vulnerabilities in defenses and questions about the near coastal threat, while acknowledging Allied and Japanese factors in a broader wartime context.
Every town reaching its Second Liberty Loan quota will receive a dark blue pennant similar to the Honour Pennant of the First Liberty Loan. Camden raises £12000, Campbell Town £15000, Picton £7000 toward the regional drive.
The Deputy Mayor Alderman Co. A Nicol appeals for voluntary workers to assemble Sunday morning to help construct a Leumeah home for the widow and family of the late Mr James Reynolds. Carpenters builders bricklayers plumbers electricians and others are invited to assist in fencing or other tasks. See Ald Nicol for details.
In the absence of Mr. Jeff Bate, M L A, Mr. Alex Mair M L A advises that repairs to Minto Public School premises and renovations to the Bringelly Public School residence have been authorised. The Minister for Education says work will begin as soon as departmental painting and repair staff resources permit.
Camden observes Prisoners of War Day on June 16 with badge sales and donations urged. Parcels to POWs cost the Australian Red Cross Society £300,000 yearly now. sending parcels to Japanese-held prisoners could raise this to over £1,000,000 annually, with NSW share £400,000. Donations to Miss H. Moore or Mrs. E. A. Davies.
The Oaks Red Cross supper dance held at the Oaks Literary Institute last Saturday raised £18 5 3 with extra donations. Rex Wanson of Burragorang and Jim Kennedy of Orangeville provided rescue music after the usual orchestra failed to attend. A rainbow cake won by Miss Patty Dunk netted £2 15 3. an open order brag won by Mr John Holdsworth. a fancy necklet won by Miss D McEvoy.
The Camden Town Hall is occupied by the military next Tuesday so the Women’s Hospital Auxiliary meeting is rescheduled for Friday June 12 at 3 p.m. A Red Cross Dance at Campbelltown Town Hall is planned for Saturday night with an enjoyable time assured.
Camden branch of the Country Milk Suppliers Association held a special meeting amid low attendance due to brownout and petrol shortages. Chairman C. S. McIntosh led talks on appointing a producers' representative to the Milk Board, the TB and abortion tests, and rates for suppliers, with M L A Jeff Bate attending and Mr R V Moore resigning as honorary secretary.
