Christmas 1938 message from Campbelltown News announces year end issue. office closure from Saturday noon to Wednesday morning. New Year Eve close at noon and reopen January 4. ad alterations for January 6 due by 10 a.m. December 29 to allow staff holidays.
Mr Jeff Bate resumed duties with a Northern district swing visiting Narellan School and Camden Parents and Citizens’ Association to push District Rural status. He inspected Campbelltown Milk Depot, met the Campbelltown Agricultural Society, attended a P C Juvenile Ball, and discussed Onslow Park building grants with Camden Council. He and Campbelltown Mayor Marlow surveyed Wedderburn after hurricane damage and attended prize giving, then went to Bowral for high school events and Speech Day, plus Bowral Annersley College, then joined the Christmas gathering at Minto. This week he toured Lakesland Buxton fruit districts and southern areas, with an Introduction Dance planned at the Town Hall.
Fires and a cyclone heat wave devastated Wedderburn fruit crops including apples pears plums peaches grapes and passionfruit. The mayor pressed ministers and the Rural Bank for relief while the Campbelltown Fire Brigade saved homes and the Wedderburn bridge.
In Sydney the hearing under the Compensation to Relatives Act heard Mrs. Maggie Thomason of Campbelltown sue the Municipality of Campbeltown for pecuniary losses after her husband died from injuries when a pole crushed his leg during electric light installation work. He died August 2, 1937 after July 13 injury. The council argued workers compensation precludes common law action. The jury found for the council.
