A Royal Australian Air Force aircraft from Melbourne to Canberra crashed on approach, killing ten aboard. Victims include Minister for the Army G A Street Minister for Air J W Fairbairn and Sir Henry Gullett, with other senior officers and crew.
Aldermen signed the presence book and adopted the previous minutes at the Tuesday meeting. A motion to send a sympathy letter to the Commonwealth Government through H P Lazzarini MHR conveyed citizens of Campbelltown and the council. The motion by Ald C A Nicol was seconded by Ald TR Fitzgibbon and carried with aldermen standing for a moment.
Mr. Alderman M J Griffin director of War Savings Certificates campaigns in country centres asks the Council to defer a public meeting in Campbelltown for four weeks. He will speak during his state tour on War Savings Certificates and asks the Council to notify him of the rescheduled date. The Mayor is to decide the date.
Aldermen discuss water main extensions at Lindsay Street and drainage at Warby Street. No further actions reported. a conference will occur in about two weeks. Mr Little's nephew may address the Little property when he returns from the war. Mayor allows brief extension for more questions.
Town Clerk Mr F Sheather reported to the Council after attending the Workers' Compensation Commission sitting in Sydney on August 7. Judge Per Griau indicated the award would be in favor of Mrs Thomason widow of W A Thomason who died from injuries while employed by the Council. The Clerk said he heard from the Press that the Registrar of the Court had the matter last Friday but details were not yet known. Councillor Fitzgibbon asked about costs. the Clerk replied there would be no cost to the Council as it is insured.
At the monthly social in the local school the P and C Association presented a wall clock to pupils. The inscription reads H C Memorial Clock and honors the late Mr Corderoy for his work in the amid district established by the Memorial fund.
The Acting Health Inspector told Aldermen that sullage waters from several premises polluted street gutters, violating Ordinance No. 39. With dry weather and limited water use, the council urged residents to abate the nuisance by directing sullage away from drains into backyards. The Mayor noted sewerage would come only after adequate rains. Ald. Fitzgibbon proposed letters to residents to prevent costs from abatement.
Town Clerk reports only two parental applications amid calls to boost immunization against diphtheria. Alderman Nicol urges action as water shortages threaten public health. Mayor notes early immunizations succeeded. A request to Campbelltown Baby Health Centre is approved to aid outreach to parents. Water scarcity affects dairy farmers drawing water from stand pipes.
The 20th Infantry Brigade marches from Ingleburn Camp toward Bathurst with large parades for crowds. The 2/13th Battalion, led by Lieutenant Colonel Burrows, crosses to Wallacia then to Bringelly Road for a cross country leg toward the Hume Highway amid cheering Campbelltown residents.
