A witness at a broadcasting inquiry session criticized war commentaries for misinforming listeners and urged they be curbed. He argued commentators contradict each other, confuse audiences, and fail to reveal the true state of affairs, noting Nazi tactics and the unpredictability of dictators.
The Commandant Miss G Moore reports Red Cross guidance requires at least one month of continuous hospital training for overseas service. A new VAD hospital training course starts September 1, with a preliminary meeting on August 26 at the Royal Prince meeting house.
Mrs Annie Wheeler of Mt Hunter Camden died at home on Tuesday morning aged 107 years. She was Camden’s oldest resident, remembered for kindness and neighbourly help. Born at sea in 1844 in New South Wales, she married Samuel Wheeler in 1863 and left a large family and many descendants. The Wheeler family helped build Camden, cutting timber for St John’s Church and the first Camden Inn. Funeral held at St John’s Camden with ministers Rev T G Paul and Rev Horace Croft.
Francis Folkes a 60 year old Elderslie native and wicker worker died in Camden District Hospital early Saturday. He leaves a widow two sons and two daughters with brother James and sister Mrs H Shaw. Funeral at R C Cemetery Sunday was well attended led by Rev M O Dea.
A July 26 party at Theresa Park Public School organized by the War Effort Committee raised funds for the Salvation Army totaling £11 4s 3d. Winners across events included Monte Carlo waltz, Chocolate wWar'4, Spot and Balloon dances, and contests like lucky cap and euchre. Organisers thank all helpers and participants.
About 75 guests gathered in Appin last Saturday to honour Paddy Bourke on his 80th birthday. Attendees included T H Skilton of Balmain and Harry O Grady of Sydney with many friends from Campbelltown and nearby districts. The event featured dancing with Helman at the piano and R Scott on the accordion, followed by speeches and a toast. Bourke recalled his life in Appin born August 1 1861 and a cricket memory of a 100 not out while a fielder’s ball broke a yard fowl’s back, before singing For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow.
Ald Stradling honoured Campbelltown resident Mr Starr on his birthday with a small ceremony and token gift. The event featured a splendid supper and varied entertainment by Paddy Bourke Shirley Clark the Starr family and others, ending as a memorable social night in Appin.
Camden Red Cross executive committee acknowledges 18 0 cash from Hospital Auxiliary contributions from Miss Stevens and Mrs Bassingthwaighte magazines. Members urged to attend weekly sewing on Tuesday and bring friends. Annual meeting August 27 with Mr B R Rivey addressing. July deliveries include 55 pillowslips 25 underpants 10 hospital shirts and more.
Camden council attendees included Mayor H. S. Kelloway and Aldermen Larnach, C. Orig, Davies, Whitford, Smart, Lee, Doust, and Whiteman. The body invited tenders for a town clerk cabinet and cards, offered council services for earthworks to build four tennis courts and an eight‑court sports oval, and ordered action to abate ammonia discharge from the Gag Works with sewer connections and nuisance cleanup.
The council noted revocation of the dedication of the public camping ground and its reservation as a public pound. It accepted payments for survey costs and considered associations with the Local Government Association conference in Newcastle September 24–26 with two delegates appointed. It discussed fundraising appeals with memorial and war effort considerations, sewer extension coordination, and several building applications approved after surveyor recommendation.
The secretary reports for the quarter ending June 30 forwarding £5 to the Lord Mayor's Patriotic and War Fund and sending tires to local soldiers overseas at 6d each. Canteen cups (three) 5d each were sent to local men overseas. In June £11 was sent to the Lord Mayor's Fund to support the tea effort led by Ming Morice.
