Australia’s empty spaces limit settlement prospects
A 1930s report notes Australia’s climatic and transport hurdles restraining expansion. It cites vast arid zones with low rainfall and uneven seasons, and highlights regions like the Mallee, Yorke Peninsula, and Roma as unsuitable for large wheat belts. The study urges intensive farming in proven areas and better fodder, while warning against costly schemes.
