Bundaleer Forest Valuable Asset Subdivision
The Hunialeer forest in Australia’s mid north is a valuable asset for settlers. Commissioner Whitford reports the timber type now identified supports closer settlement plans. Bundaleer began in 1876 as the first government planted forest, originally 20,000 acres, now about 7,800 acres after subdivision. Revenue and costs over 15 years show a net balance of £36,000, plus potential £20,000 with standing timber. Over five million trees distributed. earlier plantings focused on hardwood with uncertain returns. Firewood and posts provided substantial income. forest supports 3,000 to 5,000 sheep on hilly grazing land.
