Odds and Ends From a Century Ago
A collection of quips and facts includes a thanks to Chairman Col. J. J. Brooks for conducting a meeting, a joke about a girl, and a witness exchange. Notes mention Britain using two million gallons of petrol daily and a Glasgow chimney 265 feet tall with a Burton on Trent rival at 373 feet. Also cited are a language note on influenza, a teacher’s Africa riddle with two lions and four tigers, and a joke on a dress looking like two weeks’ salary. The Commons library reportedly houses over 100,000 volumes and a man boasting never to harshly speak to his wife provokes reflection on kindness.
