Constitution Alteration (Social Services) 1946
The act seeks to amend the Australian Constitution to allow Parliament to directly fund and regulate social services such as invalid and old age pensions, medical and dental benefits, child endowment, and family allowances. It responds to the Pharmaceutical Benefits case by establishing a broad Commonwealth appropriation and powers to ensure nationwide social security measures continue and expand, while preserving state powers where not inconsistent.
