Gladstone Public Meeting Creates Ambulance Committee

A Friday night gathering at the Gladstone Institute formed a committee to supervise the motor ambulance donated by the Commonwealth Government. Dr. J. W. Prior chaired, outlines included fund raising, equipment needs, and temporary service by St John Ambulance members. A Savings Bank account was opened in the district council officers’ names.

Frome Triumph Over Southern Flinders In Wirrabara Tennis

The Frome Association won 13 sets and 156 games to 11 sets and 146 for Southern Flinders at Wirrabara on Saturday January 31. Matches included men and women divisions with multiple doubles and singles tests led by M Lowe and G Thomas among Frome players.

Death of Mrs M E Nelson in Adelaide at 56

Elizabeth Nelson of Gladstone died in Adelaide on January 27 after illness. She was 56 and had aided the Fightinng Forces Comforts Fund during the war and supported the Methodist Church and Women's Guild. Survived by her husband and four children Avis Headley Eric and Sydney. Interred at Centennial Park Cemetery. A former resident of Gladstone, Beatrice Matilda Novak nee Howard, died in Adelaide January 29.

Weather and crops suffer in Wirrarara as drought bites

February notes report no rain in Wirrarara for January while last year’s January rainfall was 8.07 inches with 22 points. Heat damaged gardens and fruit trees, bees suffered, and combs melted in hives. Lucerne hay is failing and prices rise. Combined Kitchen Evening At St James Catholic Hall Jamestown

Dancing and socializing marked a combined kitchen evening at St James Catholic Hall Jamestown on Tuesday night. M C Mr Sugar Williams led the event with two young women Miss Mary Polomka and Miss Audrey McKeough receiving gifts along with recitations and a solo performance. Auld Lang Syne closed the gathering with supper and kind wishes from Rev Dr Prendergast and others.

Peterborough Dressmaking Classes Planned For 1948

Jamestown and Gladstone will host branch dressmaking classes for 1948 with Miss B M Lindsay and Miss M D McNaughton enrolling students at the Jamestown High School on February 11 and February 12. Fees are 15 shillings per term or 3 shillings for full-year prepayment. Classes run Tuesday and Monday evenings under Registrar J A McCarthy.

Gardener Soldier Retired Leader From Signals Branch

Colonel Jim Thyer, recently retired from the Staff Corps, settles on ancestral acres at James town with a library on gardening and compost tactics. A Duntroon trained signals officer, he commanded Eight Division Signals in Malaya and later aided his division after release in 1945. His paternal grandfather was a noted wheat grower and exhibitor in Sydney, Melbourne, London, and Calcutta.
