Jamestown council notes a serious fire and siren issues, approves hay stacking, and discusses a new wage and time-sheet system. They authorize repairs to the fire pump, consider daily siren sounding, and thank locals for service.
Large turnout at the Gladstone Institute on Wednesday December 15 for a free picture evening under St John Ambulance Brigade and Voluntary Service Detachment auspices. Air Raid Precautions film Safety First was shown with the General Secretary Mr Buttrose present.
The proclamation demands 21 year olds born in the year ending June 30 1940 enlist and train in Citizen Forces. Medical exams begin January 3 with the first camp drafting January 22. Eligibility covers males 18 to 60 who have six months residence and British subject status, subject to exemptions for judges ministers lighthouse keepers and certain employed persons.

The Australian Red Cross Society plans immediate overseas work as troops depart. Over 500 types of goods will be shipped, including medical supplies and convalescent foods. A blood transfusion bank on a motor truck with a refrigeration unit will be used. Up to 3,000 men in hospital expected within months.
