Mr and Mrs Fred Couzner of Jamestown head a large family with five sons serving in the AIF across Australia and adjacent territories, plus two sons-in-law in the army. At the Gladstone RSL monthly meeting a Christmas treat for their troops’ families was planned, to be held December 17 at 7 39 pm at the Institute. Families were urged to bring baskets and children to the event.
The St James Catholic Church congregation hosted a gift evening for Miss Eileen Slattery ahead of her marriage to L Cpl Frank Britta AIF. Dr Prendergast presided and voiced cheerful remarks. Speakers included E T Daly F Tully E J C Williams and Miss Callary. Miss Slattery replied and many gifts were presented.

Jamestown residents heard a fire siren Monday evening as a grass fire broke out in the back paddock of Mr. J. O. Dunning at Leamington. Dunning and neighbours aided until firefighters arrived from nearby areas and the flames were beaten out with no serious damage. The cause remains undetermined.
In Jamestown, the Sisters of St Joseph presented candidates at AMEB exams with all succeeding. Colleen Irvine achieved honours in PracticalPreparatory, Jéan Coat and Helen Cox earned credits in Grade VI and V, Eileen Kelly passed in Grade IV and III, Ben Evans and John Coat posted passes or honours in Grade III and V, Mary Yeates passed in May Grade II.
A successful American afternoon at Caltowie benefited St Killiat s Church. Competitions were won by Mesdames N. atoyal L. Holland and C. Barker. Mrs Noble won the cake. A well stocked Trading Table run by Mesdames L. Slat very and A. Neindorf did strong business. Mrs Noonan and Miss M. Doody organized the tea. Donations boosted proceeds to £30.
Jamestown High School invites parents to Speech Night at the Parish Hall on December 14 before break up. The programme serves as a farewell to Mr Pyne who heads to Gladstone High School next year as that school is promoted to Class 3. Mr L C McCarthy will arrive as headmaster from Naracoorte.

A two night students concert at Laura Town Hall drew full houses thanks to Mrs A James and an assistive team. The event featured floral stage decor and lighting by W H Kranz with performances by pupils and Laura Orchestra. A vote of thanks was given, a gladioli bouquet presented, and after supper and a dance, £60 was donated to Red Cross and Comforts Fund from the £70 2s 10d takings.
