Safflower as a potential drought resistant crop in South Australia
Waite Agricultural Institute reports safflower as a drought resistant annual oilseed. Trials 1940 46 show yields up to 1590 pounds seed per acre with 24 32 percent oil and iodine value 141 5. Compared to linseed safflower oil yields may be higher though iodine values differ. Planting in May or June flowers in November and matures early in January.

Safflower Seed Prospects for South Australia Wheat Growers
Tests over eight years show yields of 20 to 30 bushels per acre for wheat under challenging conditions. Safflower seed, weighing 42 to 46 pounds per bushel, contains around 22 to 28 percent oil, with some strains reaching 84 percent. Trials occurred at Murray Bridge and Saddleworth, with a price around 9 shillings 6 pence per bushel noted but unconfirmed. The editor notes limited knowledge of safflower cultivation in South Australia and seed scarcity. Linseed imports from India and Argentina may affect local markets if linseed remains scarce.
