Durham Election Drama Spurs Public Debate on Temperance Policy
Mr Tennyson Smith publicly defended his telegram urging votes against the Liberal candidate in Durham. At a July meeting in the Public Hall, he faced questions about Local Veto and disestablishment, arguing Elective Boards fall short and that temperance aims justify his stance. The audience split, with a large vote supporting Smith’s amendment and few condemning votes, signaling mixed support for temperance tactics within the Liberal alignment.
