35th Annual Meeting at Lambeth Palace Presided By Archbishop

The C E T S held its annual gatherings with the 35th Annual Meeting at Lambeth Palace led by the Archbishop of Canterbury. The Police court and Prison gate Mission reported five more missionaries and 82 women employed across dioceses. Labour yards and women shelters in London, Liverpool, and Blackburn thrived, temperance among sailors rose with 7 325 new pledges in 1896.

Fourth Annual Festival by Juvenile Branches at Crystal Palace

The Juvenile Branches of the C.E.T.S. held their fourth Annual Festival at the Crystal Palace on May 8, with about 14 000 children and 12 000 adults present. Clergy attended including the Bishops of London and Stepney. A prominent feature was the March Past before the Duke of Cambridge. Mrs Temple distributed the prizes.

Women's Total Abstinence Union Annual Meeting Report

The union met on 18 May with Mrs. W. S. Caine chairing. Directly federated societies rose to 203, up 34 in a year, with branches tied to local societies. Receipts totaled £1,657 and expenditures left £56 in hand. The union was praised for its success and hoped to continue its impactful work.

The Primitive Methodists in London's First District passed a resolution urging abstinence and personal labour by church members. It aims to curb pauperism crime insanity and sin by promoting sobriety and supporting laws to control or prohibit the root causes.

Baptist Abstinence Association Annual Meeting Highlights

At Spurgeon's Tabernacle on April 28 the Baptist Total Abstinence Association heard Canon Wilberforce, Robert Cameron MP, and T Kyffin Freeman. The report lists 1490 ministers abstainers and notes 1043 churches using fermented wine with about 600 more still using it, urging all churches to switch to unfermented wine.
