Samurai, favorite for the second division of the Moore field Flying Welter, failed to place after a poor start. Despite his pace, the chestnut horse could not sustain the early drive, though he showed potential to win his share of sprints. Several Saturday starts were hindered by indifferent getaways.
Backers and trainers slam starter Jack Gaxieu after Politesse, a two year old filly by Lord Quex, repeatedly fails to jump and disrupts rivals at Moorefield. Sportswriters urge stewards to bar the horse to protect other runners and prevent further injuries.
Harris praised his chestnut Dutiful after a strong performance yet Gold Spark won while Dutiful was squeezed and checked at the barrier and rails. The horse needed the run and is expected to improve soon with Joe’s prior wins and losses noted.
Tolerant, a Rosehill gelding, won a maiden at Warwick Farm long ago and was considered capable of Newmarket level. He failed to place in a recent suburban welter but ran a creditable race against pace-makers, showing he can handle weight and should soon win a suitable Novice or other race.
Jim Pike seeks a metropolitan win as Night of Love, The Nineteenth, The Palmist and Grand Hotel run strong but fail to win. Night of Love shows improvement after a Melbourne form slip and Moorefield fourth a cracker effort, finishing narrowly behind Aureus in a tough sprint field.
Two apprentice riders K and N Watterson are cousins with bright futures. N Watterson rode Gold Spark to victory while K Watterson rode Jovial Son in the Moorefield race. Trainer Papworth praises their discipline and promising beginnings after the meet at Kensington.
