In a rough Jumpers' Flat, Mab's Boy finished second after two brushes with trouble. The Trial Stakes featured 14 rivals. Lady Dunnottar edged a tight photo finish under Ted McMenamin and Fred Cash.
In a competitive Ascot Handicap yesterday Hieron attracted strong backing and won decisively. Royal Sceptre led briefly before Pimm's rider N Wilson pressed to challenge but fell short as Hieron surged clear. Jim Duncan rode Hieron to a commanding finish ahead of Pimm's with Mulley unable to close.
Pol Morse led from early in the race and extended the margin past the judge. Zel chased but finished two and a half lengths back with Orontes third, while Coora and others faded to disappointing finishes in a poor field performance.
Owner trainer Fred Cash plans a quick withdrawal for Light Dragoon after a controversial Ascot showing where the 64 to 1 favorite finished in the straight. The horse has defied odds in three straight starts, prompting the decision to send him abroad for a holiday and reward risky punters with his next move.
Metallic was a warm second-favorite for the 2nd division at Ascot after yesterday's Flying Welter, but the gelding did not start. The stable believed he could not have met the right value, and punters aimed to reclaim losses from Metallic. Cyril Killian's horse would not have needed a lazy effort to beat Pol Morse, with Delmester and Kaylah records noted in the six and a half furlongs heat.
