Cooranga, Stan Lamond's mare, surged from midpack to win the Botany Handicap over 7 furlongs by a length. Grey Derby and Rolante chased, while Diamond Wedding faded to last. Royal Prince led early but failed to finish.
Ockslea, who finished badly in the big hurdle at Randwick, staged a strong comeback to win the Second Hurdle yesterday. The public felt aggrieved as Lockslea’s team seemed to gain smoothly, prompting calls for explanation from race officials.
