Nightbeam, the odds-on favorite, faltered in the stretch as Celebrity and St Elmo surged. Despite a valiant late effort by Nightbeam, the field held firm and the horse finished several lengths behind at Ascot in the Quality Handicap.
At Ascot Jumpers' Flat Race Blackie Miller trailed and later faded to second as Sanpam led, with Gunbearer weakening to fourth and Trekster bringing up the rear. Sanpam edged clear near the three furlongs, finishing ahead by two and a half lengths, while Blackie Miller improved late but could not overtake the winner. Speed King held third ahead of Gunbearer.
Randwick trainer Bill Henderson profited from quick-hitting bets after Shipley was sold to Mr. F. Christey and carried his hue. Henderson backed Shipley at Menangle Handicap and then won again with Celebrity in Kurnell, proving a sharp accumulator play.
Alan Verde raced clear from the bend to beat Pimm’s and Pen in a tight finish at Mascot. Dashing Cavalier pressed the leader early but could not prevail as Constant and Denita stayed in the market. Denita reportedly showed a nerve issue, while Calvalier and others trailed as the long run unfolded.
