One month after the Rosehill stipes had a busy day they resumed several inquiries begun on Saturday. The Spearshot fall in the Rosehill Handicap remained unresolved and will be heard again at 11 on Thursday. The Burillis hurdle handling inquiry closed with CC Black censured for not persevering. Jh N Warnton received a one month suspension for careless riding aboard Brazenface. Pavilion Johnnie Jason and Pentheus faced trouble in the same race with Grazenface deemed responsible.
In Melbourne on Monday the trotter Landlock from Sydney was seized by the Stipes before the Trotters' Brandicap at Richmond. J Dempsey, a veteran horse-breaker, claimed Landlock, a nine year old by OF from Sheila, with both sire and dam dead. The horse, bred at Leeton, had prior wins at Kerang Terang and Stawell and a best open handicap time of 2.24. While in stipes custody, Dempsey is barred from driving or riding any horse in a race.
A South Kensington visit reveals trainer W E Botterill feeds Native Bee a pumpkin enriched diet. He mixes two pounds of pumpkin into the horse’s nightly feed, plus an apple before races. Native Bee has won nine pony races including four handicaps, while others like Mary Wood Derby Nugham avoid pumpkin.
The European bred Legislator gelding impressed in a tough Rosehill three year old handicap and his late surge suggests strong form for the big Randwick mile. Pentheus holds the top weight in Ep som prospects while Chide, despite a sixth place, is far from finished as a spring contender.
Following a forward run at Rosehill on Saturday Legislator attracted strong betting for the Epsom Handicap yesterday and was coupled with Veilmond for £10,000. Legislator remains among the second favorites for the Ars leg of the double as Pentheus and Veilmond hold steady popularity.
