Schools Race on the Yarra Amid Strong Winds and Large Crowds
The Yarra boat race drew about 28,000 spectators on the north bank as Geelong Grammar won with Geelong College second and Wesley College third. Strong head winds and a rough sea hindered crews while rain stayed away. The football round opened the Great Public Schools competition with easy wins. St Ignatius defeated The Scots 29 nil and Sydney Grammar beat St Joseph’s 25-6. Multiple matches featured high scoring and standout players, with rivalry set for upcoming fixtures at Riverview and North Sydney. Obituaries note several Melbourne old boys killed or wounded in action, including Lieut Franc Falconer Carse and Lieut O M Chilvers. The May issue of St Joseph’s College magazine covers sport and alumni updates.
