China Yesterday and Today A Retrospective on 1857 and Modern China
A reflective piece tracing the 1857 Anglo French expedition to Hong Kong and Canton, the bombardment at Fatshau, and Commissioner Yeh's crimes, then tracing later British French actions in China. It argues that despite warfare, the open door doctrine remained illusory and China’s fate points to dismemberment, with Japan and Western powers pursuing varied aims. It contemplates China’s destiny amid a world of imperial competition and rapid change.
