The ladies work committee set Friday next November 3 at Sunshine Town Hall to provide wood for knitting and material for flannel shirts from 10 a.m. to noon and 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. to aid troops. The arrangement continues on every subsequent Friday to support comforts for the troops.
Acting on executive committee instructions, the Sunshine District Patriotic Fund secretary forwarded letters to district groups soliciting support for the fund that sponsors the Red Cross and Comforts Funds. Organizations will stage entertainments or donate to the general fund, and local business firms are urged to contribute locally rather than sending funds to headquarters.
The document lists committee members including F. T. Ryder and Mrs C. Milne with editors and managers from Sunshine Advocate, Massey-Harris, and various banks. It records hon. treasurer E. Hargreaves and donations from Mrs George McKay, Mr and Mrs Stuart McKay, H. V. McKay, and Old Sunshine Red Cross Society totaling amounts such as £65 and £33/1/7.
The Sunshine Horticultural Society plans a Saturday November 4 inspection of private Macedon gardens. Buses depart at 10 a.m. from the Sunshine post office, with luncheon provided. About five shillings the cost. secretary Dr J R Parsons asks for early notice to arrange transport. The Macedon society spring show follows that afternoon and evening. Thomas Stephen Keogh was convicted and discharged at the Sunshine Court this morning for drunken and disorderly conduct on the prior Saturday night.
The Horticultural Society held a spring display at Sunshine Town Hall with judging by F Dowse and R Seymour. Open and Amateur classes featured roses, pansies, ranunculi, irises, carnations and knitted baby frocks with close competition and ties resolved by prize reallocation.
The marriage of Miss Leila Oke of Sydney Street to Mr Robert Barrie will take place at Sunshine Presbyterian Church on Saturday November 25 at 6 16. Miss Alison Clough of Derby Road will wed Mr William Gibson of Dickson Street on Saturday December 16 at 2 p.m.
Constable David Power led a prosecution after a plainclothes officer witnessed a youth draw obscene graffiti in a Sunshine post office telephone box. Leonard Morley of 18 Neal Street West Footscray was charged and fined £2 for the offence after the transfer of the drawing was produced in court.
Sunshine Court heard several cases including Clarice May Moiler fined 30 for no wireless licence and lamp renewal delay. Albert E. Lupton paid 8 for an overloaded speeding motor truck, Edgar R. Martin 2 for similar offence, and Lawrence Hugh Love 2 for load excess. John Marshall avoided conviction for hawking with expired licence. Albert Williams fined 5 for stealing stone dust toppings from Braybrook Council after claiming mud-prone access to home. Inspector J H Jarvis prosecuted.
The St Albans Presbyterian Church will celebrate its 25th anniversary with a 3.15 p.m. service led by Rev. A. C. Wright, a Korean missionary, followed by an 7 p.m. evening sermon by Mr D. C. Robertson. A Tuesday anniversary social will invite many former members.
