Hugh Victor McKay
An Epitaph by Hugo Huckingham
A short verse honors a man who lived simply and served his country with steadfast purpose. He shunned distraction, pursued success only to the extent of duty, and sought to mend and build. The poem places him among the few worthy of the highest honor.
The Great Strike at McKay Plant Spurs Open Shop Clash
The late Mr. McKay led the Agri cultural Implement Makers Union in a three month open shop dispute that halted wages to about £53,000. About 1500 workers struck, over 1000 at Sunshine, with only 12 non unionists employed. After the fight, McKay returned without vindictiveness. The firm now spends over £600,000 yearly on wages and salaries, uses 10,000 tons of steel and iron, timber value £100, leather £0, coal and fuel £25,000, and runs a nearly 2000 hp plant with 40 acres and 2600 employees.
