The Sunshine Court heard a case against Ficken Halladay and McClelland and against G W Pennell for discharging putrefactive matter into the Maribyrnong River. Witnesses described contaminated drainage, river pollution, and efforts at filtration. A fine of £3 and costs of £6 8s 6d were imposed.
Chas Casterford faced Sunshine Court on Thursday for hawking without a license. Senior Constable McDonald proved the case based on apples in a van on February 8. a license was since obtained and a 10 shilling fine was imposed. Shire Health Officer Dr D G Byrne, recently convalescing after surgery, returns to Sunshine this week. Harvest Thanksgiving Service set for Deer Park State School Sunday at 3 pm, with solos by Mim Godbehear.
Fishmonger James Wiffen of Hampshire Road Sunshine faced petty sessions for contravening Health Regulations. Health Inspector Thorpe testified to putrid matter and foul smells from his shop, tracing to a back room trough. defense cited heat and lost stock. A £1 fine and £2 12s 8d costs were imposed.
Sunshine Water Polo won by walkover against Surrey Park at Batman Baths as Carlton leads the premiership. Sunshine sit two points behind Carlton with a key matchup looming next week. The team has the best percentage, scoring 71 goals while conceding 23.
Due to a severe shortage of entries the gymkhana scheduled for Selwyn Park on Saturday March 24 was cancelled after a committee meeting. Less than 100 entries were received for three pedestrian and two cycling events, risking a heavy loss despite £16 prize money. A dance at Town Hall on March 24 will proceed to offset costs, with supporters urged to attend and help turn the loss into profit.
Proceeds are to be devoted to the late H. V. McKay memorial fund per the note accompanying the fundraiser. The line item emphasizes honoring McKay’s memory through charitable contributions.
A special Sunday evening service at the Methodist Church will feature Rev. C. E. Godbehear of Ringwood, with D J Draper the grandson of a Victoria pioneer minister who died in the steamer London tragedy. Also on program are Len Davis and soprano Ethel Bamford, with community singing as a highlight.
