The Shilling Appreciation Fund closes with a sizable balance to buy a gift for Dr and Mrs Lowe for their year of service to the shire. A presentation is set for 9 p.m. Monday after the council meeting. Additional subscribers include Mr and Mrs Ross Sister Hancock Mrs Ellingsen and others.
A week of work begins to replace old sleeper platforms at St Albans railway station. Concrete buttresses and slabs are being built ahead of platform reconstruction. Electric lighting has been installed, pleasing residents and the Progress Association, while a water supply remains the township’s vital unmet need.
A bridge and card afternoon Tuesday for Our Lady's Church attracted many attendees led by Rev. Father Ryder. Winners included Mrs Garde and Mrs Phyland for bridge and Mrs Wilson with Mrs Furzer for euchre. prizes and teas were enjoyed, with a good sum expected for the church.
Beginning tomorrow the New Grand Theatre Footscray offers a week long programme. Gracie Fields stars in The Show Goes On with Cyril Ritchards and a sparkling musical comedy based on Gracie's life. Supporting feature Under Cover of Night stars Edmund Lowes and Florence Rice.
Mr Ossie Beynon writes from Suva Fiji describing a couple in national dress and joking that Fiji needs a good paper. He quips that The Advocate would be a huge success since only about 10 percent of the population can read English.
speculation runs as Cr Lowe retires after a strong term with council members from the Western riding seen as likely contenders. Treloar appears the logical choice, with Pridham or Dempster possible if he declines. Parsons is a strong dark horse in the race.

Householders in the Robinson and McKay Street areas faced an unexpected water outage last night with several complaints logged. The usual tapping day is Tuesday when water shortages are anticipated. the notice may come without warning. Wheat quotations for the week ending Friday are 5/9 per bushel from the Poultrymen and Farmers' Trading Co, correcting their usual ad. Constable David Power recovered a lady's evening bag at Sunshine railway station on Saturday night. the owner may claim it at the police station.
Sunshine select a strong side for the final first-round game against East Brunswick at Selwyn Park. Arthur Stavely is likely out with a season-ending injury, while back lines including Gray and White face questions. The team seeks a win to preserve positions ahead of the final series and to thwart Brunswick’s bid for a double win this season.
