Elections in Braybrook Shire Two Ridings Contests

Braybrook Shire votes in two ridings with two unopposed newcomers. N Green for Southern Riding and J A McDonald for River Riding secure seats, while Central Riding sees John Downing versus Danny McLachlan for Dr F Hayden’s vacated seat and Western Riding pits J W Castley against Dr M B Lynch. Drayton’s failure to nominate leaves three retiring councillors not seeking re election. Green and McDonald are noted as young and set for council as the Shire nears major development. Green has sports association ties in Sunshine. McDonald is a Labor representative active in Maribyrnong groups.

No Elections at Keilor This Year

Keilor Shire will hold no elections this year as nominations closed with one nominee per riding. Drs. Morehouse and Eddie were elected unopposed in Doutta Galla and Maribyrnong. In Tullamarine only Edward John Hassed nominated. he is a market gardener and president of Keilor Progress Association.

Sun Youth Travel scheme aims to raise 260 pounds

Braybrook Shire seeks a place in the Sun Youth Travel program to send a local boy to England next year as part of a 100 boy contingent. Dr A G Pennell pledges 50 pounds to the fund. Albion Masonic Lodge hosts its Annual Ladies Night tomorrow with many members and visitors anticipated.

Cricket Club Annual Meeting at Sunshine

Sunshine Cricket Club schedules its annual meeting for Wednesday at 7.45 pm in Shire Hall with new office bearer nominations under discussion. The event will be open to ladies with a supper to follow, while practice may delay until September 23 due to finals at Selwyn Park. Secretary Norm Green notes another top player joining after two consecutive 1000-run seasons. A Morris Street house sold at £1073 by auction with EF Cameron acting as auctioneer.

Benevolent Society Plans for Ongoing Community Aid

At the annual Shire Hall meeting the Benevolent Society reaffirms commitment to helping the sick and aged widows with warmth and food. Twenty individuals received assistance last year. President Mrs G. E Dobson J.P. urged continued effort amid population growth. Dr Beachley chaired. Mrs Woinarsk i spoke on benevolent work. Officers elected include President Mrs Dobson and Secretary Mrs MacLennan. Mrs Beachley named life Vice-President.

Open Days Mark Education Week At Local Schools

Education Week activities include Open Days at Sunshine Technical School Sunshine State School Braybrook State Albion State Albion Kindergarten and Sunshine Kindergarten with dates August 16 17. An infant department display at Sunshine State School will be shown in the Shire Hall on August 16 and 17. The Sunshine Mothers Club plans a gifts sale to support the event.

Our Lady's Annual Children's Ball Shire Hall

A large crowd attended Our Lady's Children's Ball in the Shire Hall on Monday. About 800 children in evening and fancy dress danced in age groups, with a miniature Debutante Set led by Lady May oress. Infants in white frocks with Victorian posies partnered by boys in tails. two page boys and two flowergirls preceded the Deb Set which then danced a waltz. Mr Bob Jackson MC and sympathetic orchestra aided the event. The committee hosted supper for participating children, with Mrs. Birbeck as secretary.

Sunshine Band appeal seeks £200 donations

Public drive to raise two hundred pounds for the Sunshine Band invites contributions via secretary J Willaton or treasurer R Grant. Donations acknowledged in these columns. The band’s annual meeting is set for Sunday 15 August at 2 30 pm in the Sunshine Theatre with open public invitation.

Keilor Shire appoints full time engineer

Keilor Shire Council appoints Lawrence Carey C E as full time engineer at £9 00 per annum. He is 57 and brings extensive municipal experience in Victoria and NW. W Murray Pullar’s two day a week post ends by agreement after two months. A special meeting will discuss accommodation and staffing for the new officer.

The Braybrook Council proposal to name the district north of Ballarat Road Maidstone as Rosamond was rejected by the PMLG The department says North Maidstone would reduce confusion for residents and officials.
