Mark's Annual Ball Lights Town Hall Social Scene
The Mark’s annual ball organised by the Men’s Committee and led by Mr M A Westrend filled the Town Hall on July 24 with about 60 couples dancing to Chandler’s orchestra. Decorations by the Ladies’ Committee featured a lush mass of foliage lent by Mrs Cecil McKay and cake by Swallow and Ariel. Dresses of attendees ranged in color from shell pink to jade green with georgette and satin finishes. A local poultry-yard boast of shooting any night intruders follows a later joke about a chicken farmer who hears a noise and calls out before firing, only to be answered by “Only us hens.”
