Joseph Raleigh and the Maribyrnong Tallow Trade History
The Maribyrnong riverside trades began with Joseph Raleigh who built a large tallow works in 1843 after acquiring land from the New South Wales government. His operations supported hundreds of sheep stations and helped local colonists survive droughts by converting stock into saleable tallow in London. The industry ebbed after Ballarat and Bendigo gold finds increased demand, revived briefly, then declined again with stock taxes in 1886. Raleigh died in 1852.
