Interlake Trustees Convention Highlights Daylight Time and Curriculum Changes

The Interlake Regional Trustees Association No 21 met June 14 at Argyle Legion Hall with 26 delegates from 10 districts. Highlights include daylight saving time extension till October, curriculum updates, compulsory school leaving age 16 from July 1 1965, and plans to drop spelling in favor of oratorical contests.

Floodway Structure Anchored on Bedrock Near St Norbert

A massive reinforced concrete inlet control structure for the Red River Floodway rises 110 feet above bedrock 45 feet below the river. The $8 million project, not slated for completion until late 1966, has 60 percent of concrete poured as of fall. Two 112½ foot gates will regulate flood flows and allow marine traffic when lowered.

Farewell Held at Stony Mountain

Neighbors and friends gathered in the school auditorium on Wednesday June 23 to honor the H L Gillies family before their departure to Transcona. Rev H J Smith thanked Mr and Mrs Gillies and children for their church involvement as gifts of furniture were presented. Musical numbers and a lively sing song preceded a hour of fellowship and lunch.

Manitoba to pilot new maths science courses for seniors

About 35 000 Manitoba high school students will take part in fall pilot classes testing revised university entrance math and science programs. George Johnson says grade 10 algebra and geometry tests involve 800 and 400 pupils respectively, with 200 more in grade 12 level texts.

Water Safety Campaign Encourages Family Swim Lessons

A plainspoken call urges all family members to learn to swim before summer. It notes many canoeists and boaters cannot swim and could struggle to save themselves in an accident. It cautions that some resorts still bar non-swimmers from canoes even with life jackets available.

Manitoba introduces new Grade IX Social Studies program

A new Grade IX Social Studies course will be taught as separate history and geography subjects in Manitoba schools starting September. About 16 000 students will study British History with a theme approach and parliamentary development, and Southern Hemisphere geography then North American geography for Grade X with an optional American history course.

Confirmation Service at Christ Church Stony Mountain

The parishioners of Christ Church Anglican Stony Mountain welcomed Bishop John O. Anderson of Red River who conducted the Service of Confirmation and consecrated cemetery ground. After the service guests spoke with the Bishop in the parish hall and women’s auxiliary served refreshments marking a community gathering with attendees from Stonewall Velo and Winnipeg.

50th Wedding Anniversary Honored in Winnipeg Lawn Gathering

Family and friends gathered on the Princess Elizabeth hospital lawn in Winnipeg on June 20 to honor Walter and Mrs. Tully of Marquette on their 60th wedding anniversary. Attendants from 1915, corsages for ladies and boutonnieres for gentlemen, a three tier cake, and a large family turnout marked the celebration.
