Teulonites enjoyed a Buffalo Banquet and dance in Centennial Hall on Saturday June 20. Manitoba pins greeted guests as the Centennial theme carried through with red and blue decor and displays from 1870 onward. Mayors, judges, and committee leaders praised pioneers while buffalo meat drew mixed yet favorable notes.
A Memorial Service in Stonewall honors Rockwood Municipality and the Town of Stonewall’s war dead. Archdeacon Martinson condemns simultaneous local events, while 35 new Canadian citizens from 14 countries are welcomed. The ceremony includes Citizenship Court witnesses, music by the Royal Winnipeg Rifles band, and wreaths, ending with a pledge to remember.
Ken Rutherford of Stonewall is named the new recreational director for the town. He will coordinate activities with local clubs and organizations and work to improve facilities for residents.
On Monday June 8 around 2 pm Ted Hughes a farmer in the Stonewall district suffered first and second degree burns when a tractor gas tank exploded. He jumped off flames caught his clothing and his right arm back neck shoulder and face burned. He was treated at Stonewall Hospital and released the same day.
The Stonewall Agricultural Society held its annual parade and fair on Saturday June 20. John McLeod led the parade with the BCMP and society members, floats from Airforce Band Gimli Argyle 44 Beef Club and others followed down Main Street. Bobby Trimby sang for children as floats placed for prizes including School and Centennial displays. Mrs R J Ritchie received the Silver Tray donated by the Canadian Bank of Commerce. The day featured fashion shows, a girls baseball game and cattle judging with clear weather.
The Interlake Municipal District Convention at Gimli Recreation Centre featured Reeve Lloyd Fines of Rockwood elected director for the Interlake District. Delegates from Interlake councils discussed provincial matters, water management, mobile home licensing, and hydro development with Minister Howard Pawley and Manitoba Hydro officials noting projects and future power needs.
Regular Sunday services on June 28 are cancelled and a joint Centennial Service will be held at Stonewall Arena. Rev A F Seamans of St Peters RC Winnipeg leads with Anglican, Presbyterian, Roman Catholic and United representatives. A youth choir is directed by Dave Raine. offerings aid the Salvation Army and another charity. Bring baskets and lawn mats. hot water provided. At 2 30 the Salvation Army Band performs an hour long concert. Everyone is welcome.
A two storey frame house belonging to Mr and Mrs Ken Blue three miles north of the Perimeter Highway on No 7 was destroyed by a fire of unknown origin. The Elfis’s lost all personal belongings and furniture. Fire noticed about 2:30 pm. Rockwood Stonewall Fire De partment limited damage, but the residence lacked fire fighting equipment and nearby services helped. The office of the service station suffered roof damage and windows, while the barn and station office were preserved as much as possible. Police controlled traffic on the highway amid fears of potential fuel leaks. Nonetheless the house and contents were beyond saving.
