After months of negotiation plans are ready for a six lane bowling alley on the old skating rink site east of the cafe. The Brunswick of Canada project aims for an August opening with automatic pin setting and local staff. Leagues will form as play begins, serving Stonewall and surrounding areas already traveling to Winnipeg for recreation.
Green Foxtail is a serious weed on light sandy soils. For oats and barley use TCA at 2 to 3 tbs per acre before three leaves, with 2 lbs on light soils. MCPA Amine or Sodium Salt can mix with TCA. In flax rapeseed sugar beets use 4 to 6 lbs TCA or 0.75 to 1.25 lb Dalapon before three leaves. DCA 4 to 6 lbs per acre in field peas before three leaves. Mix 10 to 15 minutes, apply 8 to 10 gallons water per acre, and avoid overlap. Follow label.
A Stonewall Track Club has been formed to promote track and field during summer and fall. Executive members include G. Mackie as Honorary President, Don Clark as coach and director, and Doug Crookshanks. Meetings begin Wednesday July 6 with events for Bantam, Midget, Juvenile, and Junior age groups and contact details for Don Clark and Doug Crookshanks.
Canada Post issued a five cent green stamp on June 9 to honor Sir Wilfred Grenfell born 1866 in Parkgate England. The stamp shows him at the helm of a ship navigating ice on the Newfoundland coast and was designed by the Canadian Bank Note Company.
The 40th anniversary of the United Church in Canada was celebrated in Stonewall Grassmere and Argyle Churches with confession and a sermon by Rev. Dr. A H Oussoren about true service. The congregation pledged renewed dedication and offered prayers for guidance. Next Sunday is Fathers Day with a sermon on Marriage Problems and Teenagers. A bike outing by Religion and Life Award classes to Mrs Chiey’s farm included eighteen youths and a large lunch.
The Stonewall 4 H Home Economics Club held its first Achievement Night on May 3 in the Parochial Hall with many parents and friends viewing the work. Ribbons awarded totaled 14 red 11 blue and one white with some projects moved for re judging at Selkirk.
Stonewall Golf Club hosted the second annual Hockey Golf Tournament with 25 players. Skeeter Haflant posted a gross 76 to win the Hep Riley Memorial Trophy, while Laurie Langrell of Winnipeg won the low net prize and Milt Trayhurst claimed back nine honors.
Easter Seal Campaign chairman reports success with thanks to the Kinsmen Clubs of Stonewall and Toulon and to local media for support. He praises district contributions enabling the society to expand rehabilitation programs for physically handicapped children across the province.
Mr Ed Kilimpke attended the Manitoba and North West Ontario Command Convention in Fort William Ontario last week. He held the lucky ticket at the draw for a 1965 Ford car. Stonewall Legion Branch No 52 received 1000 dollars as the seller of the lucky ticket.
Merbert Leonard Gillies has been appointed chief clerk to Canadian Pacific’s district freight manager T. H. Johnson in Winnipeg. Gillies has held multiple roles across the region, including assistant agent at Broadview Lac du Bonnet Whitewood night operator at Hawk Lake Ignace and Kenora and agent at Vermilion Bay Stony Mountain before moving to the freight department. We wish Herb the best in his new job.
Community notes show Grosse Isle planning a sports day on Saturday July 10. June events include the 50th birthday of Dugald W. L. on June 9 and multiple visits and congratulations across families in Morden Rosser Pinawa London Ontario and Sydney Australia with births weddings and visits.
The 54th annual meeting of the Woman's Auxiliary of the Deanery of Portage la Prairie opened at St. Oswald's Church on May 20 with Holy Communion. Life Memberships were conferred, and delegates heard reports from the Diocesan Board and various departments. A luncheon, prayers, and a closing benediction followed with plans announced for next year.
The Inwood Busy Beavers Home Ec Club met June 2 at Cossette School with two absences. They scheduled a bingo for June 11 at 8 30 p.m. at Inwood Memorial Hall and discussed the 4 H Rally at Stonewall with transportation plans. Members practiced marching.
The annual Decoration Day Service for Woodlands and District is set for Sunday June 27 at 2.15 p.m. A parade will form at the school and the address will be given by Rev. J C Martinson of Stonewall with the Salvation Army Band in attendance.
Memorial service for Rockwood Municipality and Stonewall to honor war dead from World Wars held in Stonewall Park on Sunday June 20 at 2.40 pm. The Royal Winnipeg Rifles Mant will attend.
The Red River Exhibition will feature international acts headlining the Grandstand show. Among them are New Zealand singers and dancers and the Mayan Aztec group from Mexico, plus Rich Little as master of ceremonies and other acts from Switzerland Poland and Canaries. The Birdmen from Mexico will perform flying pole routines and ritual dances. The event includes livestock shows, Miss Manitoba pageant, and multiple entertainment and exhibition offerings across June.
