George Willis has spent two weeks spraying dandelions in Stonewall to curb the yellow blooms. He cites wind and obstructions such as parked cars and toys as hindrances while noting stronger agricultural chemicals than consumer products. Mayor Dave Lethbridge says the town will monitor the issue and involve parks if needed.
The American dog tick known as a wood tick is reappearing as tick season begins and will run until June end. Manitoba Agriculture expert Dave Smith says ticks are more of an issue for animals than people and warns about mouthparts causing blood poisoning if not removed carefully. He notes ticks thrive in vegetation at ankle to shoulder height near animal paths and that animal cases are rare, mainly affecting weakened young animals, with few human cases reported.
Senior provincial entomologist Dave Smith says most tick removal methods kill the tick or take long, and the safest approach is to pull it off with a bit of skin. There is no evidence that ticks hide in any specific body area, so focus on safe removal after a picnic.
Selkirk assistant district highways supervisor Clarence Broughton reports progress on the bridge approaches north of Selkirk and the approach road to Highway 9. Western and eastern approaches should be finished this year except surfacing, with full surfacing possible in 1989 if budget allows, and intersecting work planned at General Hospital Drive and Highway 9 in fall.
