Plastic covers save grain quality in winter bins

Manitoba researchers led by Dr. Bill Muir found plastic coverings reduce mites and mouldy seeds, keep grain drier at depth, and lower spoilage in 1969 winter storage compared with straw or no cover. Oats remained better than barley, with wheat faring best. moisture rose near bin bottoms, least where a bottom plastic sheet was used. They advise well drained sites, windbreaks, proper cone piling, and careful plastic maintenance.
