Whitemouth Church Renamed to Honor Pioneer Couple

The Whitemouth Church will be renamed Ross United Church in honor of pioneer couple David Ross and Dr. Charlotte Ross Manitoba’s first woman doctor. The change takes effect Sunday September 25 with Rev. Charles Newcombe leading services. The reorganized church board and session will assume duties as United Church congregations.

The Whitemouth Chamber of Commerce convened on September 6 with focus on a stalled 30 mile zone plan. Members were told a railway crossing issue was misdirected to the wrong party. Attention shifted to the loss of cultivated farms and expanding bogs northeast and east. a committee will investigate. The next regular meeting is set for October 3.

At the Beausejour Chamber of Commerce annual meeting on September 6 Joseph Bellan a local barrister was elected president for 1949 1950 term. Other officers include Anton Weselak as secretary treasurer Abe Greenberg first vice president Harry Geneske second vice president and W W Childe as membership chairman with a forthcoming drive.

District President Visits Beausejour Women’s Institute

The Women’s Institute met at the Beausejour hotel on Tuesday September 6 with district president Mrs. Wasson of Gimli as guest. She spoke on conditions in Grandmother’s time versus today and a tag day fundraiser for the Cancer Fund was planned for September 23. Mrs. C Nichols was chosen to be the delegate for the W I leadership course in Brandon from October 30 to November 4.

Springfield Liberal executive postpones the constituency nominating convention from October 1 due to the provincial Winnipeg convention delay until September 28. Three days separate the Winnipeg and constituency meetings, so officials opt to wait. Delegates were chosen and plans set for an executive meeting in Beausejour after Winnipeg to decide a new date.

Reverend Father S. Paradis officiated on Saturday September 3 at Notre Dame church Lac du Bonnet for the marriage of Maria Holyk and Romeo Picard. The bride wore pink taffeta with off the shoulder neckline and red rose corsage. Cyril Dean gave the bride in marriage. Eva Henley was bridesmaid and Albert Picard was best man. A breakfast for the couple followed at the groom’s parents home and a Crescent Bay school reception. The couple will reside in Pinawa where Romeo works for Winnipeg Electric.

June Nell Shewchuk and John Frostiak wed at Frostiak-Shewchuk Red Lake Catholic church on August 20 officiated by Rev. Fr. Frytek. The bride wore satin with lace and pearls. attendants included Anne Baran and Pai ine Antonio. Reception for 200 guests at Gyro Pavilion. They plan to reside at Cochenour Willans Gold Mines, McKenzie Island, Ont.

Whitemouth 85th Birthday Celebrations for Jack Bartlett

Jack Bartlett turned 85 with a dinner at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Couling and a separate party at Mr. and Mrs. George Steiner. A large crowd attended both events as 85 candles lit the cake. Bartlett, a Whitemouth resident for 14 years, previously ran a restaurant and served as an agent for White Rose Co. His two sons were absent. the gathering closed with the singing of For He's a Jolly Good Fellow.
