Hecla Island Icelanders Maintain Traditions Since 1876
The Hecla Island community in Manitoba preserves Icelandic ways from their 1876 settlement. Fishing families, multi generational residents, and a strong lodge culture sustain a rugged life tied to lake fishing, with modern snow vehicles replacing dog sleds. Community history recalls a smallpox era, early isolation, and steady growth aided by roads, ferries, and power lines. Helgi Jones-Johnsson notes enduring pride as locals welcome visitors with Icelandic coffee and vinirterta dessert.
