New Plan To Help Unemployed
The Canadian Government announces a plan to subsidize newly hired workers unemployed six months or more. Starting November 1 1963 the state will pay 50 percent of wages or 75 dollars per month, whichever is less, for up to one year if the worker is 45 or older and undergoes substantial training. Initial eligibility covers hires from November 1 1963 to January 31 1964 with four months of work before subsidy, and requires ongoing training to improve qualifications and job continuity. Dr Joe Slogan praises the step but doubts its winter impact due to eligibility limits.
